Innovative Treatment Options

Treatment for chronic pain at Marianjoy's Integrative Pain Treatment Center: Chronic pain involves changes in the nervous system that create a physical effect. We treat the patient as a whole, not just the body part. We integrate treatments that target the nervous system as well as the mechanical dysfunction utilizing a combination based on each patient's unique presentation. We focus on home management strategies and pain management tools that patients can utilize to manage their pain independently.

Treatment strategies that target the nervous system:

  • Spinal interventions:
    • Spinal interventions (joint mobilization) stimulate descending pathways (increasing inhibition)
    • Decreased pressure sensitivity
  • Neural mobilization
  • Exercise
  • Graded motor imagery (including mirror therapy)
  • Graded activity
  • Sensorimotor retraining
  • Neuromuscular retraining—including motor control (utilizing rehabilitative ultrasound when appropriate)
  • Biofeedback
  • Neurophysiology of pain education
  • Electrotherapeutic Point Stimulation (acupressure and trigger points)
  • TENS
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)—with pain psychologist

Skilled therapists: Our therapists have uniquely specialized training and can provide the following types of treatments

  • Pain education and management
  • Visceral manipulation
  • Manual therapy: joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release
  • Neural mobilization
  • Graded motor imagery
  • Neurosensorimotor retraining
  • Neuromuscular re-education utilizing rehabilitative ultrasound for core motor control and strength (including pelvic floor)
  • Electrotherapeutic Point Stimulation to address trigger points
  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Integrative manual therapy (multi-system approach)
  • Neuromuscular taping
  • Kinesiotaping
  • The Feldenkrais Method®
  • Pelvic physical therapy: women and men
  • Biofeedback for pain management and pelvic floor

Some of our featured treatment options include:

The Astym® System

Developed through years of research and supported with continuous clinical outcomes, the Astym® system addresses scarring, fibrosis and degenerative soft tissue issues that often result from trauma, surgery or overuse. It stimulates the body to regenerate soft tissue (such as muscles and tendons); decrease pain; and improve tissue and joint mobility. It is shown to be effective for new injuries as well as chronic conditions.

Astym® therapy is administered by Marianjoy certified clinical experts. A physician referral is required to receive this treatment.

Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging for Low-Back Pain

Rehabilitative ultrasound imaging is a tool Marianjoy therapists use to evaluate the structure and state of soft tissue in patients experiencing back pain. Treatment using rehabilitative ultrasound imaging therapy can result in improved recovery and activity levels in patients experiencing lower back pain. Research has shown that training with rehabilitative ultrasound imaging can decrease recurrence of back pain by as much as 54.

A physician referral is required for treatment. For more information, please call 630.909.6500 or email Lisa Schwarz, Pain Management Program Coordinator, at Lisa.Schwarz@nm.org.
